UMW Men's and Women's Cross Country Finish 2nd at Longwood

The University of Mary Washington men's and women's cross country teams both finished in second place behind the Division I hosts on Saturday at the Longwood University Lancer Pink Invitational in Farmville, Va.

On the women's side, the Eagles finished with 55 points, behind Longwood's 20 and just ahead of Sweet Briar's 59. UMW was led by senior Grace Pippin who finished eighth overall at 21:19 on the 5K course, followed by junior Jessica Oberlies in 10th at 21:57, and junior Julia Snow in 16th at 22:19. Senior Amanda Heckman took 21st at 24:33, and freshman Cameron Rico placed 23rd in rounding out the top five at 24:41.

For the men, UMW scored 64 points, finishing second among four schools. Freshman Nicholas Smerlis finished fourth overall at 26:48 on the 8K course, while sophomore Luke Blair finished 16th at 28:39. Freshman Ashton Shulz took 18th at 28:46, sophomore Aidan Kimener finished 21st at 28:54, and freshman Morgan Lehocky placed 25th at 29:32.

Both teams will return to action on September 30 at the Don Cathcart Invitational in Salisbury, Md.
