UMW Women's Cross Country Places Third at CAC Championships, Men Grab Fourth

The University of Mary Washington women's cross country team finished in third place at the 2017 Capital Athletic Conference Championships, hosted by Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Va., on Saturday morning. The men's team followed with a fourth place finish in their conference championship meet.

The Eagle women finished with 65 points, behind first place York (51) and second place Salisbury (60), and ahead of Christopher Newport, Southern Virginia, St. Mary's, Marymount, Frostburg State, Wesley, and Penn State Harrisburg.

The Eagles were led by All-CAC runners Jillian Weisbeck, who finished in fourth place at 23:20, and freshman Maggie Larkin, who took seventh place at 23:30. Junior Emily Knerr was 15th place at 24:13, freshman Ashley Applegate took 19th place at 24:50, and Angelica Gaughran taking 20th place at 24:51.

Freshman Leah Saling brought home 22nd place at 24:53, senior Marin Bader was 31st at 25:24, and Olivia Story was 32nd at 25:30.

On the men's side, the Eagles finished in fourth place with 88 points, behind Christopher Newport (27), York (58), and Salisbury (83), and ahead of Southern Virginia, Frostburg State, St. Mary's, Wesley, and Penn State Harrisburg.

The Eagles were led by All-CAC runner Jeff Gibson, who finished fifth at 25:16. Senior Kevin Jones took 18th place at 26:10, followed by junior Kyle Pfohl in 20th place at 26:23, and J.P. Burklow taking 27th place at 26:46. Freshman Jeffrey Dunn finished in 31st place at 27:03 and Jake Phillips took 38th at 27:40.

Mary Washington will be back in action in two weeks when they compete at the NCAA Regional Meet back in Newport News, VA.
