UMW Men's Cross Country Ranked Ninth, Women Eighth Regionally in USTFCCCA Weekly Poll

NEW ORLEANS – There wasn’t a region that remained unchanged in the Division III Cross Country Regional Team Rankings released Tuesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

While there was a lot of movement from No. 2 through No. 10 in a lot of the regions, each No. 1 stayed at the top, including the reigning national champion North Central (Ill.) men in the Midwest Region and the Johns Hopkins women in the Mideast Region.

In fact, in the men’s poll, the Midwest Regional saw the least change out of the bunch. The only addition to the regional roundup was Aurora sliding in at No. 10.

Elsewhere, there were some movers and shakers – especially in the Great Lakes Region. Ohio Northern went from unranked to No. 3, Allegheny (Pa.) climbed four spots from No. 9 to No. 5, while John Carroll (No. 4 to No. 8) and Mount Union (No. 2 to No. 6) each fell four slots. NYU surged from No. 9 to No. 4 in the Atlantic Region.

In the women’s polls, only the New England Region led by MIT saw all 10 from the previous week return. Six of the regions (Atlantic, Midwest, Central, Great Lakes, South/Southeast and Mideast) welcomed back nine of its 10, while the West Region saw two teams move from unranked to ranked (Pacific Lutheran and Chapman).

The biggest jump in the women’s regional rankings belonged to Cornell College. After a strong showing at the 54th Les Duke Invitational, the Rams went from unranked to fourth in the Central Region.

The NCAA Division III Regional Championships will be held across the nation on Saturday, November 14. Then one week later, the national meet will be held at the Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winnerconne, Wisconsin.

USTFCCCA Regional Cross Country Rankings are determined subjectively by a single member coach in each respective region. The regional representative is tasked with weighing returning teams strength with current season results (if applicable) in determining predicted team finishes at the NCAA Regional Championships.
