
University of Mary Washington seniors Megan DeSmit and
Marina Frano have been named as the 2012 UMW Female
Scholar-Athletes of the Year, while senior Chris Marino
was named as the Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
DeSmit advanced to the NCAA Division III Swimming Championships in
March, gaining top-25 performances in three events after gaining
multiple all-conference honors at the CAC Championships in
February. The holder of four conference and school records, DeSmit
is a biology major and has been named to the Prsident's list,
Dean's list, and has gained academic all-conference and academic
All-America honors every year. She is a member of Phi Beta Kappa,
Mortar board, Chi Beta Phi, Alpha Phi Sigma, and is a member of the
National Society of Collegiate Scholars.
Frano advanced to the regional and zone championships in
equestrian in each of the past two years, serving as one of the top
riders in the program. A biology major, Frano is a member of the
National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Chi Beta Phi, Phi Beta
Kappa, Dean's List, and President's List. She has also filled much
of her time with volunteer activities, including fundraising for
and participating in Relay for Life. In the summer of 2011, Marina
volunteered at Tacketts Mill Veterinarian Hospital, furthering her
goals in her biology major.
Marino has been an integral member of the cross country and indoor
and outdoor track and field teams at UMW for four years. An English
major, Marino has been an all-conference performer in all three
sports, and been a team captain. Academically, he has been a member
of the UMW and Capital Athletic Conference honor roll every
year.
2012 marks the 22nd year that UMW has awarded the Scholar-Athlete
of the Year awards.
