1984 Mary Washington College Women's Cross Country Season in Review

Cross country at Mary Washington College has become one of the most successful of MWC's 18 intercollegiate sports. The MWC Blue Tide team has been represented at national meets in four of the last five seasons. MWC has won their regional championship three times and finished as highly as eleventh in the Division III national meet.

In 1984, the women won their second consecutive Tidewater Conference championship, took the Virginia state championship in the Division II and III meet, but placed second in the NCAA South/Southeast region and missed an appearance in the national meet field for only the second time in five years. Annie LaMura (Morganville, NJ), a sophomore transfer student, led the team throughout the year, earning All Tidewater Conference and All Virginia Division II and III awards. Her Tidewater meet time of 18: 18 on the three mile layout was good enough for first place and a Salisbury State College course record.

While Lisa Petrilli (Baldwin, MD), the top returning runner from 1983's regional champion team, struggled with injuries all season long, four freshmen joined LaMura as award winners. Amy Coddington (Manassas, VA), Peggy McKelvey (Woodbridge, VA), MWC's leader at the NCAA meet, and Susan Duggan (Ashland, VA) won All-Virginia and All Tidewater Conference medals. Christie Colley (Harrisonburg, VA) was an All State runner as well.
