UMW Volleyball Splits Two in C2C Classic in Newport News

The University of Mary Washington split a pair of matches on Sunday in Newport News, Va., falling in four games to UC Santa Cruz before coming from two games down to defeat Salisbury in five. The Eagles move to 12-4 on the season, including a 3-1 mark against Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference foes.

The Eagles started the day by dropping a 24-26, 25-21, 25-22, 25-17 decision to the Banana Slugs. The Eagles scored 55 kills, but uncharacteristically committed 20 attack errors. 

Sophomore Chloe Crosen led UMW with 14 kills, while junior Jordan Lyons scored 12 and senior Krista Rodgers 11. Sophomore Lauren Foley scored 31 assists, and junior Dakota Hansen added 21 digs, with Lyons adding 17. 

UMW rebounded to achieve the improbable for the second straight day, coming all the way back from 2-0 down to win a five-set match, this time against Salisbury. After dropping the first two, 25-20 and 25-21, UMW answered by taking the next three, 25-21, 25-16, and 15-6.

Lyons led the Eagles with 16 kills and 27 digs, while Crosen scored 11 kills and Rodgers and Caitlyn Burch each scored 10. Junior Brenna Campbell led the way with 33 assists, and Hansen added 22 digs, as UMW saw six players reach double figures in digs. Lyons also scored four service aces.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday when they host St. Mary's College of MD at 7 p.m.
