The University of Mary Washington volleyball team dropped a three-game decision at Carnegie Mellon University on Friday night in Pittsburgh, Pa. The Eagles slip to 16-11; game scores were 25-23, 25-11, 25-23.
The first game remained tight through the early action, and stayed within two points until CMU scored four straight to take a 19-14 advantage. But the Eagles scored five of the next seven points to cut the deficit to 21-19. The Tartans score three straight, but UMW answered again with four straight to cut the margin to 24-23, before dropping the last point.
In the second, the Eagles jumped out to a 3-1 lead, but CMU made several runs to move ahead comfortably, and held a 25-11 win. In the third game, UMW held a slim lead in early going, before the Tartans answered to take the lead at 9-8. UMW tied the score at 12-12, but Carnegie Mellon pulled back ahead with three straight points.
The Eagles fought back again to pull to within one at 16-15. The slim lead bounced back from one to three points for the next stretch, until a late burst from the Eagles tied the score again at 22-22. The Tartans would score of the last four points for the win.
Junior Krista Rodgers led the Eagles with 13 kills against two errors in 22 attempts, while sophomore Jordan Lyons added nine kills against two errors in 31 tries. Freshman Lauren Foley had 20 assists, and junior Makenna Santinga added nine, and senior Olivia Casey had 15 digs, with Lyons adding 13. Rodgers and Aidan Finegan each had four total blocks on the night.
UMW will continue at CMU on Saturday, facing Wittenberg at 1:00 p.m.
