The University of Mary Washington volleyball team defeated Salisbury University, 3-0, on Saturday in Coast-to-Coast Athletic Coference action in Salisbury, Md. The Eagles improvve to 12-7 overall, and 1-1 in conference play; game scores were 25-21, 25-17, 25-17.
In the first game, the Eagles fell behind, trailing by as much as 7-3, but chipped away and drew to within one, at 13-12. Salisbury held the lead until 21-18, but UMW scored the final six points of the game to gain great momentum and take the game, 25-21.
In the second, it was UMW who went ahead, 7-3, but Salisbury drew to within 8-6 before the Eagles reeled off eight of the next nine points to grab a 16-7 lead. The back-and-forth action continued, as Salisbury scored five straight before the Eagles answered with four to take a 21-13 lead. Leading 23-17, senior Olivia Casey (Norfolk, Va. / Granby) provided a kill and an ace to cap the scoring.
In the third, the Eagles dominated early in building a 15-6 cushion. After the Sea Gulls cut the margin to 16-13, UMW scored six of the next eight points to regain control with a 22-15 lead. After a SU point, UMW scored three of the final four points, with Krista Rodgers (Fairfax, Va. / Fairfax) and Marie Butler (Pittsfield, Ma. / Pittsfield) providing kills and Abby Tank (Wilmington, N.C. / Hoggard) an ace.
Casey led UMW with nine kills and nine digs, while sophomore Jordan Lyles (Fairfax, Va. / W.T. Woodson) added six kills and 11 digs. Rodgers had six kills against no digs in 12 attempts. Junior Makenna Santinga (Madison, Va. / Madison County) recorded 15 assists and freshman Lauren Foley (Virginia Beach, Va. / First Colonial) 12, and freshman Sarah Moore (Hellam, Pa. / Eastern York) scored 11 digs.
Mary Washington will be back in action again on Wednesday night at the University of Lynchburg at 6:00 p.m.
