UMW Volleyball Falls in Five at CNU in C2C Opener

The University of Mary Washington volleyball team raced out to a 2-0 lead, but fell in five games at Christopher Newport University on Tuesday night in Newport News, Va. Game scores were 16-25, 23-25, 25-15, 25-11, 15-10. The Eagles slip to 11-7 on the season.

UMW maintained early leads in both the first and second games, and never relinquished them in claiming the first two game points. UMW raced to a 13-4 advantage in the second, and fought off a Captains comeback to take the second, 25-23.

From there, CNU jumped ahead in each of the last three games, and built upon those leads early in claiming the final three games and match.

The Eagles were led by sopmore Jordan Lyons (Fairfax, Va. / W.T. Woodson), who scored 12 kills and 10 digs, while junior Krista Rodgers (Fairfax, Va. / Fairfax) had eight kills and seven total blocks. Senior Olivia Casey (Norfolk, Va. / Granby) added six kills and 23 digs, and senior Abby Wiles (Spotsylvania, Va. / Courtland) scored 13 digs. Lauren Foley (Virginia Beach, Va. / First Colonial) had 19 assists and Makenna Santinga (Madison, Va. / Madison County) 14 for the Eagles.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Saturday at Salisbury University at 2 p.m. in another Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference match.
