UMW Volleyball Tops Marymount, 3-0, in CAC Opener

The University of Mary Washington volleyball team rallied for its fourth straight win with a 3-0 victory over Marymount University on Wednesday night at Ron Rosner Arena in both teams' Capital Athletic Conference opener. UMW improves to 8-6 on the season; game scores were 25-21, 26-24, 25-12.

In the first game, the Eagles raced out to a 6-2 advantage, thanks in part to kills from Leslie Walters and Savannah Powers, and an ace from Walters. The teams traded blows until 9-7, when three straight points led to a 13-7 Eagle lead. At 14-8, Marymount caught fire and scored nine of the next 10 points to grab the lead at 17-15. The lead tightened to 18-17, and the teams alternated points until the Saints held a 21-20 lead. From there, UMW reeled off the last five points to gain the win. Three kills from Peyton Dunow ended the game.

The Eagles jumped ahead in the second, grabbing a 5-1 lead before the Saints netted six straight to lead, 7-5. Then UMW answered with five straight, with a kill from Dunow and an ace from Powers. Marymount then took three straight points to tie the score at 10-10, and the Eagles responded with three straight to regain a 13-10 advantage.

The Eagle lead swelled to 17-12, before Marymount ran off nine straight to lead, 21-17. After the teams traded points, the Eagles ripped off four straight, with three straight kills from Powers, to tie the score at 22-22. Marymount took two of the nexct three to lead, 24-23, before three straight from UMW won the game. Walters had two kills to cap the scoring.

In the third, the Eagles ran out to an 8-3 lead, and kept applying pressure, expanding the lead and not being challenged in a 25-12 affair.

Dunow led the Eagles with 18 kills against two errors to go with seven digs. Powers had 10 kills and five digs, and Walters added eight kills, an ace, and four total blocks (three assists). Freshman Wren Berry scored 36 assists, an ace, three block assists, and four digs. Kendal Hall had 13 digs and Ryan Cho 12 for UMW.

The Eagles will be back ina ction on Saturday when they host St. Mary's College at 2:00 p.m. in another CAC showdown.
