UMW Volleyball Opens 2016 Campaign with 3-1 Win at #24 Randolph-Macon

After dropping the opening game, 25-15, the University of Mary Washington volleyball team sotrmed back to take the next three in a 3-1 victory at 24th ranked Randolph-Macon College on Thursday night in Ashland, Va. The Eagles, who received votes in the national AVCA poll, won their games 25-22, 25-18, 26-24.

In the opening game, the Yellow Jackets jumped on top early and never slowed down, forcing the Eagles into 12 errors against just five kills. UMW quickly lost its early match nerves to rebound and post 16 kills against four errors in both games two and three, and ended the night with 16 kills versus nine errors in the fourth.

"Randolph-Macon definitely showed why they are a top 25 team", said UMW head coach Matt Troy. "We had some nerves early but stayed composed and resilient to pull out a tough win."

Freshmen Savannah Powers and Peyton Dunow each had 13 kills to lead UMW, while All-CAC junior Rachel Hendricks added 12. All-region setter Emma Olson had eight kills against one error, adding 39 assists and 10 digs.

Libero Jenna Yost had 12 digs, and senior Caroline Porco added 11 for the Eagles. Randolph-Macon was led by Miranda Hall's 19 kills.

UMW's victory was their second in three years against the Yellow Jackets. The Eagles will visit Haverford College this weekend for four matches, starting with a 1 p.m. match against Arcadia on Saturday.
