UMW Volleyball Ranked 22nd Nationally by Prepvolleyball.com in Weekly Poll

The University of Mary Washington volleyball team, off to its best start in five years, has been ranked 22nd nationally by prepvolleyball.com in this week's national poll. The Eagles are grouped with Clarkson and Mount Union, who all split matches against each other last weekend.

From Prepvolleyball.com:

In putting together the updated Top 25, there was a fair amount of clarity with the top half of the rankings.

At least in the sense the Top 11 or 12 teams seemed to rise above the rest in looking at results. If those teams lost, it was to another team in the Top 10.

For example, Calvin lost Emory but comes in at No. 2 in this week’s Top 25. That’s because Calvin was our preseason No. 1 and Emory our preseason No. 2. So they just switched spots this week.

Three teams are new to the Top 10 in Bethel University, Colorado College and Chicago. Colorado and Chicago haven’t lost yet, while Bethel’s only loss came to Wisconsin-Stevens, a Top-5 team.

Hope has two losses but they are to Chicago and Calvin, both quality defeats and reason why Hope is No. 11 and the only team ranked in the Top 18 with two setbacks.

It starts to get a little sticky after that.

There’s the dreaded triangle with Clarkson, Mount Union and Mary Washington. The trio went 1-1 against each other, so there’s no choice but to rank a team ahead of someone it lost to.

It gets cloudier moving down even further, because teams have a bad loss but not many own a quality victory. It’s going to take some time to sort out the bottom half.

At least so far, the top half of the Top 25 has shown they belong there, in one order or another.
