UMW Volleyball Tops Washington & Lee, 3-0, to Improve to 15-4

The University of Mary Washington volleyball took a 3-0 victory over Washington & Lee University on Saturday in a closely contested match at the Anderson Center on Saturday afternoon to improve to 15-4 on the season. The game scores were 31-29, 25-22, 25-16.

The Eagles started strong in the first game, reeling off the first five points, before the Generals came back with four straight. The match remained tight, with neither team holding more than a two-point lead throughout the remainder of the first game. UMW overcame a 22-21 deficit and eventually won, 31-29, in the first.

In the second, the Generals held a 15-13 advantage, but four straight points with Emma Murphy on the service line gave UMW an 18-15 advantage. UMW ran the lead to 24-18 before W&L scored four straight to cut the deficit to 24-22 before the Eagles got the winning point.

In the third, UMW took control midway through, with Murphy again serving, running the lead to 21-9 with six straight points. A late charge from W&L cut the final to 25-16.

Sophomore Rachel Hendricks led the Eagles with 14 kills, while Megan Payne had nine kills and four block assists. Emma Olson had eight kills, 35 assists, and 11 digs, and Murphy had five kills, two aces, and three block assists. Jenna Yost scored 15 digs and Casey Spanitz added 10.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday night when they host York College of Pa. at 7 p.m. in a Capital Athletic Conference matchup.
