UMW Volleyball Tops Bridgewater, Hiram at Captains Classic on Friday

The University of Mary Washington volleyball team captured a pair of matches on Friday at the Captains Classic at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Va. The Eagles topped Bridgewater College, 3-0, before edging Hiram College, 3-2, to improve to 2-1 on the season.

UMW opened the day by downing Bridgewater, 25-17, 25-11, 25-22. The Eagles were led by sophomore Rachel Hendricks, who had a team-high 11 kills in 28 attempts with just three errors. Junior setter Emma Olson had 24 assists, Jenna Yost posted 16 digs, and senior Megan Payne added three block assists.

The Eagles then faced Hiram, a strong program that was ranked regionally a season ago. UMW came away with a five-set win, 17-25, 25-18, 21-25, 25-13, 15-9.

Hendricks once again led the way for the Eagles with 21 kills in 50 attempts, while freshman Leslie Walters scored 13 kills and senior Emma Murphy 10. Olson logged 46 assists and 12 digs, while Yost scored 13 digs, and freshman Ryan Cho added 11 digs. Murphy and Walters each had two solo blocks.

Mary Washington will return to action on Saturday at the Captains Classic, facing Meredith University at 10:00 a.m., and Susquehanna University at noon.
