UMW Volleyball Splits Final Day of Worthington Classic

Washington, D.C.-- The Mary Washington women's volleyball team defeated Messiah in the first match, then lost to Bridgewater (Va.) in the second match. The Eagles move to 8-5 on the season.

In the opener, the Eagles faced the Falcons of Messiah College. The first game was a hard fought match, ending with a 28-26 victory for Messiah. Mary Washington fought back, winning game two 25-23. The back and forth match continued with the Falcons winning 25-14, before UMW tied the match with a 25-21 win in game four. In the decisive fifth game, UMW squeaked out a 15-12 victory, taking the match.

Kaitlynn Wickersham (Midlothian, Va./Manchester) led the Eagles with 14 kills. Freshman Gussie Revercomb (Roanoke, Va./North Cross) chipped in 11 kills. Emma Olson (Vienna, Va./Oakton) paced UMW with 38 assists in the match.

In the nightcap, UMW faced Bridgewater (Va.). The Eagles played in a thrilling five set match with Bridgwater, however Bridgewater came out an won game one with a score of 25-18. The Eagles struck back taking the next two games by scores of 25-22 and 25-19. Bridgewater tied it up with a 25-18 win in game four. In the final game, Bridgewater pulled away with a 15-13 victory.

Olson and Wickersham led the way with 16 and 13 kills respectively. Olson also had 30 assists in the contest. Olson gained All-Tournament team honors, finishing the Worthington Classic with 48 kills and 101 assists.

The Eagles return to action on Wednesday, October 2nd. UMW opens CAC play with York (Pa.) in Fredericksburg. The match with the Spartans begins at 7:00 p.m. from the Anderson Center.
