Eagles Split Opening Day Matches at 2013 Worthington Classic at Gallaudet

Washington, D.C.-- The University of Mary Washington women's volleyball team participated in the opening day of the 2013 Worthington Classic, a tournament held by Gallaudet University. The Eagles opened the day by defeating Catholic 3-0. The team then fell to Whittier College 3-0 to end day one.

Against Catholic, the Eagles jumped out of the gate early, winning the first two games by scores of 25-22, and 25-19. The Cardinals bounced back to take game three by a score of 25-18. UMW closed out the contest with a big 25-15 win. 

Freshman Emma Olson (Vienna, Va./Oakton) continued her strong week with 18 kills. She was one of three Eagles with double digit kills. Kaitlynn Wickersham (Midlothian, Va./Manchester) and Kayla Crawford (Richmond, Va./Powhatan) each added 13 and 16 kills respectively. Courtney Guengerich (Herndon, Va./Herndon) chipped in 33 assists for the Eagles.

In the second match against Whittier, the Eagles dropped a hard fought 3-0 decision. The Eagles lost in three sets; 25-23, 25-17, 25-22. Wickersham paced the Eagles with eight kills, while Olson added seven. Olson led the team with 19 assists as well. 

Day two of the Worthington Classic begins at 12:00 p.m. when the Eagles take on Messiah College. UMW will then play at 2:00 p.m. against an opponent yet to be determined, and will be decided on the outcomes of the morning matches.
