Matt Troy has been hired as the new head volleyball coach at the University of Mary Washington, according to Athletic Director Ken Tyler. Troy comes to Fredericksburg from Johns Hopkins University, where he led the Blue Jays to a 77-21 record with two NCAA Tournament apperances in three years at the helm.

"We are pleased to welcome Matt Troy to our staff as head volleyball coach" said Tyler. "Matt brings an outstanding track record of success from Johns Hopkins, one of the nation's top academic and athletic institutions.  His 54-9 record with NCAA appearances over the last two years was very appealing, and we look forward to our volleyball team reaching new heights under Matt's leadership. Most importantly, Matt is a person of character and integrity who will motivate and inspire his student-athletes to achieve in the classroom and on the court." Tyler added, "Finally, we would like to acknowledge the outstanding tenure of long-time volleyball coach Dee Conway and express how glad we are that she will remain part of our team as head softball coach."

Troy led Hopkins to its best season in program history in 2012, as the team notched a program-best win-loss record of 29-4. The Blue Jays won their first 16 matches of the season and won the Centennial Conference title for the second-straight season.

"I want to thank Dr. Searcy, the search committee and Ken Tyler for the great honor and privilege of becoming the next head volleyball coach here at the University of Mary Washington", said Troy. "My family and I are extremely grateful for the opportunity and look forward to being a part of an extraordinary staff and group of student athletes in achieving their goal of becoming a top 25 athletics department in NCAA Division III."

Hopkins dropped just four sets en route to capturing the Centennial Conference crown in 2011, as Troy was named Centennial Conference Coach of the Year. The Blue Jays finished the 2011 season with a record of 25-5.

Prior to coaching at JHU, Troy served as the head coach at Howard Community College for one season. In his one season with the Dragons, he led the team to an 18-16 record and a third place finish in the conference with a 10-2 mark, as well as the top seed in the regional tournament. Troy also coached three of his players to All-Region honors.

Troy spent six years with the Caroll Vipers Volleyball Club in Maryland, most recently as assistant director and head coach. He also spent one season as an assistant coach at Gettysburg College. He most recently taught physical education and health at Crestwood Middle School in Frederick, MD. Troy is a 2002 graduate of West Virginia University with a bachelor's degree in physical education and health. In 2009, he completed his master's from West Virginia in athletic coaching education.

Troy and his wife, Melissa, and their four daughters: Alexis, Kamryn, Emily and Brooke, will move to the Fredericksburg area shortly after the new year.
