UMW Volleyball Blanks Frostburg State, 3-0, in CAC Opener

Junior libero Christine Tran scored 15 digs to lead the University of Mary Washington volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over Frostburg State university in both teams' Capital Athletic Conference opener on Wednesday night at the Anderson Center. Set scores were 25-19, 25-22, and 25-14. UMW improves to 4-1 on the season.

The Eagles overcame sloppy play early in the match to take the first set, 25-19, and rallied late to pull away in the second. The Eagles led throughout in set three with an 11-point advantage.

In addition to Tran's effort defensively, freshman Nora Forknall scored six service aces, and junior Kaitlynn Wickersham added nine kills and five digs. Seniors Ellen Smethurst and Laura Gomez each scored six kills for UMW. Freshmen setters Courtney Guengerich and Maggie Parrish added 14 and 13 assists respectively.

The Eagles will travel to Rocky Mount, N.C. on Saturday for a nonleague match against North Carolina Wesleyan College at 11:00 a.m.
