UMW Volleyball Wins EMU Hampton Inn/Sleep Inn Invite; Improves to 4-0

Junior hitter Laura Gomez (Charlottesville, Va., Albemarle) scored 10 kills on 17 attempts, and junior hitter Karissa Herrick (Colts Neck, N.J., Colts Neck) added eight kills to lead the University of Mary Washington volleyball team to a 3-0 victory at Eastern Mennonite University in their first Saturday match at the Hampton Inn/Sleep Inn Invitational. Set scores were 25-18, 25-22, 25-17.

Gomez scored 10 kills with just one error for a .529 hitting average, while Herrick had just two errors for a .316 mark. Sophomore Sammy Hogue (Springfield, Va., West Springfield) had 27 assists and seven digs for UMW, while Herrick had four block assists and sophomore Kaitlynn Wickersham (Midlothian, Va., Manchester) added three total blocks.

The Eagles then defeated Salem College, 25-17, 25-17, 25-13. Kayla Crawford (Richmond, Va., Powhatan) had nine kills, Gomez and Wickersham each added eight kills, and Sammy Hogue and Katie Shiflett combined for 33 assists for UMW.

The Eagles will play the first-ever game in the William M. Anderson Center on Wednesday, hosting Capital Athletic Conference foe Marymount university at 7:00 p.m..
