2000 Mary Washington College Volleyball Season in Review

The 2000 Eagles opened the season with·their entire starting lineup from the previous year intact. With one sophomore, four juniors and one senior in the starting lineup, MWC raced out to a 14-2 record, among the best starts in school history.

The Eagles opened with six straight wins, including 3-1 victories over Shenandoah University, Lebanon Valley College, and Lynchburg College, and a thrilling 3-0 win over Christopher Newport University. After splitting four matches at the Gettysburg College Tournament (including a win over eventual NCAA Tournament-qualifying Salisbury State University); Coach Dee Conway's squad ran off six more consecutive wins, including Capital Athletic Conference wins over Gallaudet University, St. Mary's College, and York College of PA, and a five-game nail-biter at Bridgewater College. The Eagles finished with an 18-11 record, finishing fourth in the Capital Athletic Conference with a 4-3 record.

Despite the loss of graduating senior Chrissi Stoehr, a GTE Academic All-Region selection, and setter Mary Barton, the Eagles return a solid nucleus for 2001. First team All-CAC hitter Monica Bintz heads the group of returnees, having led the CAC in hitting perentage (.324) in 2000, and ranking among the league's top ten in kills (2.65 per game), service aces (.44/gm), and blocking (.61/gm). A Verizon Academic All-Region sleection, Bintz also earned all-state recognition from the state's sports information directors association.

Also returning for the Eagles is hitter Kristin Schaible, who led the team in blocking (.83/ gm) as a junior transfer in 2000. Schaible had a solid debut, registering 224 kills and a .238 hitting average in addition to her blocking prowess. Fellow rising senior hitter Kathy Gochenour will look to continue her success in 2001, as the hitter had her most productive season as she remained healthy for the entire season. Gochenour had 145 kills and 155 digs this fall, proving her worth as a multitalented player.

Rising junior Sarah Libby carne on strong as the season went along, leading the team in digs for the second consecutive season (2.99/gm). Libby, who was named to the Goucher College Invitational All-Tournament Team, broke the school season record for digs as a freshman in '99: Other potential returnees from the 2000 squad include setter Amy Ackerman, hitters Beth Harker, Lauren Eigel, Kristin Marion, and Jessica Crawford.
