1994 Mary Washington College Volleyball Season in Review

The youth movement arrived for Mary Washington College volleyball in 1994. A team with no seniors and just two juniors overcame inconsistency and inexperience to capture the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) regular-season championship with a 6-1 record.

Head coach Dee Conway welcomes back the enitre '94 squad, and hopes to bring in a strong freshman class. The Eagles will aim for a second CAC Tournament title, after winning the inaugural championship in '91. To achieve that goal, MWC must continue "fundamental improvement," especially in overall offense. The Eagles did top the CAC in blocks at 4.9/ game, a mark which also ranked among the best in NCAA Division III.

First-Team All-CAC hitter Angie Long (Jr./Warrenton, VA) tied with Nicole Conner (So./Richmond, VA) for the CAC lead in individual blocking. Long also paced MWC in kills and service aces. Other top hitters were Sarah Burgess (So./ Hamilton, VA), who posted the team's best attack percentage, Julie Bartlett (So./Woodbridge, VA), who led the Eagles in dig average and Melissa Dowell (Jr./Woodbridge, VA), a solid all-around player and a team leader.

Setting up the Eagle offensive attack was freshman setter Hilary Clark (Woodbridge, VA), who ranked fifth in the CAC in assists. She also tied Long for the team lead in service aces. Defensive specialists Kirsten Franklin (So./West Friendship, MD) and Marianne Baldwin (Fr./West Chester, PA) were strong servers and capable passers. Franklin especially provided a big lift because of her ability to register clutch aces at pivotaljunctures. Conway was encouraged by her young team's ability to retain focus during the all-important conference matches. Her aim is consistency throughout the '95 season, both in individual matches and in tournament play.
