#26 UMW Women's Tennis Tops SUNY New Paltz, 5-0, in NCAA Tourney 1st Round

The 26th ranked University of Mary Washington women's tennis team defeated SUNY New Paltz, 5-0, in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Friday afternoon in Middletown, Conn. The Eagles advance to Saturday's second round against the University of Redlands.

On Friday, the Eagles moved swiftly in gaining the lead in doubles. At two doubles, Emily Beckner and Addison Felts gained an 8-1 win over Onalee Batcheller and Isabel Van Der Veen. Riley Smith and Linda Dimitroff upped the margin after an 8-1 win at three doubles over Tatiana Barnett and Nina Genzone. Amanda Hagino and Hana Kimmey completed the sweep a one, with an 8-4 win over Justine Stanejko and Loretta Donovan.

The Eagles gained the first set in five of the six singles matches, and the first to finish were Felts at three with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Van Der Veen, and Smith at six with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Olivia Kunz.

UMW will have a rematch with 10th ranked Redlands in the second round. The Eagles dropped a 9-0 decision at Redlands during the regular season.
