
The University of Mary Washington women's tennis team defeated Christopher Newport University, 5-3, for the 2023 Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championship on Sunday afternoon in Newport News, Va. The Eagles capture their 19th consecutive conference title, and improve to 10-9 on the season.
The Eagles gained the lead in doubles after dropping an 8-2 decision at one, as Abby Moghtader and Rebecca Stepleman scored an 8-5 win at two over Kiersten Chang and Mia Linam, and Riley Smith and Emily Beckner defeated Megan Bauer and Kendra Womack at three, 8-1.
In singles, UMW gained the first point with a 7-5, 6-0 victory by Stepleman at four over Anna Campbell, but CNU gained the next point with a win at three. Moghtader scored a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 victory at one over Raine Weis, and, after another Captains win at two, Beckner picked up a 6-4, 6-3 win over Womack at five for the clinching win.
Moghtader was named the tournament MVP, and Stepleman and Hana Kimmey were named to the all-tournament team.
The Eagles will now advance to the NCAA Tournament, which will be played next weekend at a location to be determined.
