The University of Mary Washington women's tennis team competed this weekend at the St. Joseph's University Invitational, against Division I opponents.
THe highlight came as junior Abby Moghtader and senior Lauren Quinn won the Flight 1 doubles draw, defeating Bodewes and Manwiller of Loyola, 9-7, teammates Emily Beckner and Hana Kimmey in the semis, 8-2, and Elliott and Weiss of St. Joe's in the final, 8-6.
Claire Coleman and Amanda Hagino also reached the semifinals, downing Aguirre and Decker of Loyola, 8-4, and Bockman and Giambo of Marist, 8-4, before falling to Elliott and Weiss, 8-5. Riley Smith teamed with Julia Thompson of Loyola to win one match, 9-8 (5) over Ciano and Zaphris of Loyola before falling, 8-1, to Amato and Amato of St. Joe's.
In 1 bracket singles, Lauren Quinn lost to Laura Manwiller of Loyola, 6-3, 3-6, 11-9, in the first round, and Abby Moghtader defeated Stow Weiss of St. Joe's, 6-1, 3-6, 10-3, in first round action before falling to Loyola's Olivia Tracey, 7-6 (4), 6-3, in the semifinal.
In 2 bracket singles, Claire Coleman defeated Ellen Zureick of Marist, 7-5, 6-4, in the first round before falling to Emily Elliott of St. Joe's, 3-6, 7-5, 10-7. Hana Kimmey fell in the second round after a bye in 3 singles to Ireland Amato of St. Joe's, 6-2, 7-5. Emily Beckner fell in 3 bracket to Emma King of Marist, 7-5, 6-1.
Amanda Hagino won her first match in 3 singles, topping Sophia Amato of St. Joe's, 6-1, 7-5, before falling to Julia Thompson of Loyola, 7-5, 6-7 (4), 10-7. Riley Smith defeated Brooke Santoriello of Loyola, 6-1, 6-2, before falling to Thompson, 6-2, 7-6 (3).
The Eagles will host the annual ITA regional championship at the Hegmann Tennis Facility on September 25-27.
