Matt Brisotti Named Head Women's Tennis Coach at UMW

Matt Brisotti has been named head coach of the University of Mary Washington women's tennis program, as announced by UMW Director of Athletics Patrick Catullo. Brisotti, who comes to UMW after a successful stint as head men's and women's coach at Hamilton College, becomes the ninth head coach in program history.

"We look forward to having Matt join our team as the next head coach of the women's tennis program and continue the team's long tradition of excellence," said Catullo. "With his experience as a tennis coach and his background in Division III athletics, Matt will be a great addition to our department."

"I would like to thank Athletic Director Catullo, head men's tennis coach Todd Helbling, and the search committee for allowing me this opportunity to be a part of this amazing athletic department and storied program", said Brisotti. "The program has a rich tradition of success, and I look forward to working with the student-athletes and alumni to bring the program to new heights both on and off the court."

Both Hamilton teams excelled in Brisotti's first full season with the Continentals in 2018-19. The women finished the season at No. 40 in the ITA Division III Team Rankings and 13th in the Northeast Region with an overall record of 11-4 including 3-3 against NESCAC opponents. In 2019-20, Hamilton started 2-0 before the pandemic, and in the abbreviated 2021 season, Hamilton played five matches – all against top 16 programs – in NESCAC play.

Brisotti guided the Hamilton men to their highest dual match win total since 1995-96 and best winning percentage in 25 years with an 11-5 record in 18-19. The men landed at No. 18 in the final ITA Northeast Region Team Rankings and a doubles pairing set a team record for victories in a season. In 2021, Hamilton played just four matches, all against top-10 opponents.

Brisotti was the head coach for Drew University men's and women's tennis from the spring of 2014 through the fall of 2017 and his teams won 63 dual matches. He was selected the 2016-17 Landmark Conference Women's Tennis Coach of the Year after he guided the squad to a record of 14-2, including 7-0 in the conference, and the semifinals of the Landmark championship.

The Drew men's team enjoyed a great deal of success in 2016-17 under Brisotti as well. The Rangers posted a 16-4 record and earned a spot in the Landmark semifinals with a 5-2 conference record.

A fine player in his own right, Brisotti finished his collegiate career as one of the top players in Drew men's tennis history. As of 2017 he was fourth on the program's list with 55 career singles victories and he held the team record for most career doubles wins with 64. He made the Landmark all-conference first team in singles twice and was on the second team for doubles three times. He was a captain and the team's most valuable player his senior year. Brisotti helped the Rangers achieve a great deal of team success as they assembled an overall record of 50-25 and boasted a perfect 28-0 mark in conference play. Drew was conference champions all four years with Brisotti, and the Rangers made three NCAA Division III championship appearances. Drew advanced to the second round of NCAAs in 2010 and 2012.

Prior to leading the programs at Drew, Brisotti was the head women's tennis coach at College of Saint Elizabeth in 2013-14. He was an instructor at Murray Hill Tennis & Fitness and The Strand Tennis Center in New Jersey.

Brisotti was a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee at Drew where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in sociology with a minor in public health. He is from Mattituck, N.Y., and graduated from Mattituck High School.
