Moghtader Named C2C Athlete of the Year, UMW Dominates as C2C All-Conference Tennis Teams Announced

The 2021 Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Women's Tennis Awards and All-Conference Teams were relased on Monday morning, with UMW's Abby Moghtader and Todd Helbling capturing major awards, while all six singles players and all three doubles teams were represented.

Athlete of the Year: Abby Moghtader - Mary Washington
Abby Moghtader claims C2C Athlete of the Year honors after posting an 8-3 record, primarily at one singles, including a perfect 8-0 mark against NCAA Division III competition. She has been similarly successful in doubles, as she and partner Lauren Quinn have gone 7-1 against Division III foes.

Doubles Team of the Year: Tessa Trate & Amanda Yermal - Christopher Newport
The Captains tandem of Tessa Trate and Amanda Yermal played together at No. 1 doubles in all 11 matches this year. They posted a 7-4 record with one win over Division I competition and a 4-0 mark in conference play. Against the second-ranked team in the Atlantic South, Trate and Yermal won 8-4, picking up a marquee win on the season when they faced Mary Washington in conference play. 

Rookie of the Year: Tessa Trate - Christopher Newport
In her first season, Tessa Trate earned a spot in the top-ten of the NCAA.com Regional Rankings after posting the finest singles record of the year for the Captains. Two of Trate's seven wins came against Division I competition and her only two losses came to ranked opponents in Division III including an epic three-set battle to Washington & Lee's Gabi Moss. She also excelled in doubles play, earning C2C Doubles Team of the Year honors after a top-five regional ranking and a 7-4 overall record. 

Scholar-Athlete of the Year: Kara Ferner - Christopher Newport
Kara Ferner was named a Goldwater Scholar as a junior, earning what is widely considered the most prestigious award bestowed on undergraduates studying the sciences and engineering. A double major studying Applied Physics and Computational & Applied Mathematics, Ferner was also named Team Captain for the CNU women's tennis team for her final season. She led the team in victories with eight in singles and seven in doubles. 

Coaching Staff of the Year: Mary Washington - Todd Helbling, Head Coach
Todd Helbling, who has gained conference Men's Coach of the Year honors in numerous years, adds Women's Coach of the Year honors to his mantel in 2021 after leading the Eagles to an undefeated record against Division III foes in 2021. He has led the men's program to 19 NCAA Tournament appearances, and will look to lead both programs to championships this weekend.
