Rachel Summers Named CAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Mary Washington's Rachel Summers and Salisbury's Brad Pappalardo earned CAC Tennis Player of the Week for April 2, 2019.

Mary Washington junior Rachel Summers gained wins at one singles and one doubles as #12 Mary Washington topped Christopher Newport, 8-1, on Saturday. She edefeated nationally ranked Johanna Ranta-aho at one singles, 6-1, 2-6, 10-5, and teamed with Lauren Quinn at one doubles to down Ranta-aho and Olivia Reed, 8-3.

Brad Pappalardo led Salisbury to a 4-0 week, including three CAC victories, as the freshman was perfect in four individual contests in the league matches. In Friday's 8-1 win against St. Mary's, Pappalardo earned a 6-4, 7-6 (7-1) win at No. 2 singles, just his second time playing as high as No. 2 this season. He moved up in the lineup on the weekend, helping Salisbury top Penn St.-Harrisburg and York -- each by 6-0 scores. Against Harrisburg, Pappalardo came up with a 6-0, 6-2 win in his first ever appearance at No. 1 singles. Later in the day, he went for an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles against York and closed his week with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles against the Spartans. The Ashburn, Virginia native has started his career in impressive fashion with wins in all seven of his singles matches and a 6-0 mark in doubles.

NOTES AROUND THE CONFERENCE

Southern Virginia's Kukutla Motlojoa was perfect on the week, defeating Guilford 8-6 in No. 1 doubles and 6-3, 6-2 in No. 2 singles for the 7-2 team win and then followed his performance with a hard fought 8-7 No. 1 doubles victory over Methodist University. He also went on to win his No. 2 singles match 7-6, 6-4 to help the Knights pull off the 6-3 win...Mary Washington's Moses Hutchison picked up a pair of points as #16 Mary Washington topped #36 CNU, 8-1, on Saturday. Playing at three singles, Hutchison defeated Ryan Macy, 6-2, 6-1. He and Matt Miles won at one doubles, 8-3, over Macy and Ryan Mason. The Eagles have won 11 straight matches....Salisbury's Annika Kezman went 2-0 in singles play and 2-1 in doubles play this week at the top spot. In singles play, Kezman picked up one of three points in a 6-3 contest against Division I Delaware State University, claiming the No. 1 match by a 6-3, 7-5 score. She also earned a 6-1, 6-3 win against York as Salisbury went 3-0 in CAC play this week. Against the Spartans, Kezman also teamed with Laura Brown to pick up an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles. The pair battled against Delaware State, falling in a tiebreaker 8-7 (9-7). Her other doubles win came against St. Mary's, winning 8-4.
