AMHERST, Mass. – The No. 14 University of Mary Washington women's tennis team advanced past Simmons College, 5-0 Friday morning in NCAA Division III First Round action at the Amherst College Tennis Courts in Amherst, Mass.
Mary Washington (20-4) advances to the NCAA Second Round Saturday, May 14 at 11 a.m. at the Amherst Tennis Courts and will take on No. 8 Wesleyan University (11-5).
DOUBLES HIGHLIGHTS
- In #1 doubles, Shelby Harris and Kait Brogan defeated Meg Cokely and Theresa Reinhard, 8-0, while Mackenzie Smith and Taylor Diffley secured an 8-0 win over Katie Crowley and Rachael Downey in #2 doubles.
- In #3 doubles, Caroline Mosberg and Sara Fioretti notched an 8-1 victory over Mary Matthews and Ashley Chen to give Mary Washington a 3-0 lead.
SINGLES HIGHLIGHTS
- Mary Washington closed out the match as Smith earned a 6-1, 6-0 win over Chen in #5 singles, while Chrissy Gaul contributed a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Ashley Pierce in #6 singles.
- In #1 singles, Brogan held a 6-1, 3-0 lead over Reinhard, while Harris held a 6-2, 3-2 advantage over Cokely in #2 singles.
- In #3 singles, Diffley led Crowley, 6-0, 4-1, while Mosberg was ahead, 6-0, 1-0 against Downey in #4 singles.
