#17 UMW Women's Tennis Tops #33 CNU, 7-2, in 2016 CAC Championship on Saturday

The 17th ranked University of Mary Washington women's tennis team jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles en route to a 7-2 victory over 33rd ranked Christopher Newport University on Saturday in the 2016 Capital Athletic Conference Championship. The Eagles, who improve to 19-4 on the season, win their 13th consecutive CAC title.

The Eagles claimed one doubles, as Kait Brogan and Shelby Harris defeated McKinney Harwood and Alexandra Drye, 8-4, and two doubles, as Taylor Diffley and Mackenzie Smith downed Katie Carlson and Kate Huck, 8-4. Caroline Mosberg and Sara Fioretti completed the sweep, again by an 8-4 score, to send the teams to singles with UMW leading 3-0.

Harris won at two singles over Carlson, 6-2, 6-0, and Mosberg claimed the clinching point at four, winning 6-4, 6-2, over Claire Dockrill. Chrissy Gaul won at six, 6-2, 6-4, and Diffley won at three, 6-2, 6-3, over Huck. CNU then picked up wins at five and one, as Drye defeated Smith, 1-6, 6-4, 6-2, and Harwood topped Brogan in an epic third set tiebreaker, 2-6, 6-1, 15-13.

The Eagles claim their 13th straight CAC Championship with the win, and 24th overall in the 26-year history of the conference. They will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, with announcements on brackets coming soon.
