UMW's Goimarac Named CAC Women's Tennis Player of the Year as All-CAC Teams are Released; Catullo Named Coach of the Year
YORK, Pa. - Mary Washington junior Courtney Goimarac (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) continues a long and impressive list of Eagles that were selected by the conference coaches as the CAC Women’s Tennis Player of the Year when she won the award and earned first team singles and doubles recognition to lead the 2010 All-CAC Women’s Tennis Team.

Goimarac, now a three-time first-team All-CAC selection in both singles and doubles, brings the Player of the Year trophy back to Fredericksburg, Va., for the seventh-straight year and the 18th-time in the 21-year history of CAC women’s tennis. She is the 14th different Eagle to win the award and the sixth UMW player to win the Rookie of the Year (2008) and Player of the Year awards during their careers.

The coaches also named Salisbury newcomer Jillian Poppe (Califon, N.J./Voorhees) the 2010 Rookie of the Year and UMW mentor Patrick Catullo the Coach of the Year.

Poppe, who joined Goimarac as a first-team singles and doubles all-star this season, is just the second Sea Gull player to win the CAC Rookie of the Year award. Former Salisbury standout Erica Mitry won the award in 2004.

Catullo captured the Coach of the Year award for the fifth-straight season and joins Dr. Edward Hegmann (eight times from 1991 to 1999) and Cindy Vander Berg (three times from 2000 to 2004) as UMW coaches to be honored by their peers.

Goimarac was one of six members of the conference champion Eagles to combine for 10 positions on the 2010 All-CAC team. Junior Megan Lawlor (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) along with sophomores Michelle Meadows (Virginia Beach, Va./Collegiate) and Kathryn Schafer (New Market, Md./Linganore) each earned first-team singles and doubles nods this season.

Schafer, the 2009 CAC Rookie of the Year, repeats as a first-team all-conference choice in both singles and doubles. Meadows moved up in both singles and doubles from her position as a second-team all-star in 2009. Lawlor is a first-time all-star.

Junior Danielle Velardi (Bradford, Conn./Bradford) and sophomore Casey Malcolm (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy) were both named to the All-CAC second team for the first time in their careers.

Four of Poppe’s Salisbury teammates were named to the 2010 All-CAC squad, including senior doubles partner Jackie Burr (Dover, Del./Caesar Rodney). Burr, a first-team singles and doubles choice this season, finished her career as a three-time singles all-star and a four-time doubles selection.

Seniors Kelly Fahrner (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) and Rachel Iosue (Damascus, Md./Damascus) were chosen as second-team singles and doubles all-stars this season. Fahrner is a four-time singles all-conference pick and a three-time doubles choice while Iosue was named to the All-CAC second team for the third time in her career in both singles and doubles action.

Junior Angela Tenaglia (Clarksville, Md./Reservoir) also gained second-team All-CAC singles recognition for the first time in her career.

Wesley senior Rebecca Pennington (Earlville, Md./Bohemia Manor) and York sophomore Katelyn Acker (Narvon, Pa./Pequea Valley) were also honored by the CAC coaches as second-team all-stars for the first time in their careers.

The doubles teams of senior Dani Hunt (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) and freshman Emily Maerz (Myersville, Md./Middletown) from Hood and senior Michelle Compton (Havre de Grace, Md./The Tome School) and freshman Chelsea Bradcovich (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) from St. Mary’s were tabbed as second-team All-stars. Compton earned second-team recognition for the Seahawks in 2009.
