UMW's Apperson, Schafer Named CAC Tennis Players of the Week
Mary Washington freshman WILL APPERSON (Louisville, Ky./Ballard), Salisbury senior SCOTT BURTZLAFF (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) and Mary Washington sophomore KATIE SCHAFER (New Market, Md./Linganore) were selected as the CAC Tennis Players of the Week for Mar. 2, 2010.


MEN’S TENNIS
Mary Washington freshman WILL APPERSON (Louisville, Ky./Ballard) and Salisbury senior SCOTT BURTZLAFF (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) were named the CAC Men’s Tennis Co-Players of the Week.
Apperson began the spring by winning all five singles matches and the fourth, fifth and sixth positions in the lineup. Apperson also posted a 4-0 mark in doubles play, helping the Eagles to a 3-3 overall record.
Burtzlaff played well in two early-season tournaments, advancing to the championship in both the singles and doubles brackets of the 13th-annual Sea Gull Open. In the Sea Gull Invitational, Burtzlaff went 3-0 in singles competition and combined with doubles partner Evan Thomas for another two wins.


WOMEN’S TENNIS
Mary Washington sophomore KATIE SCHAFER (New Market, Md./Linganore) was named the CAC Women’s Tennis Player of the Week after opening the season with a 4-0 singles record and a 3-1 doubles mark, leading the Eagles to a 3-1 team record. All four singles wins were in straight sets, including a 6-4, 7-5 victory at No. 2 singles in UMW’s lone team loss of the season against NCAA Division I rival George Mason.
