Fresh off of a pair of Capital Athletic Conference titles and a program-high 17th place finish at NCAA Championships, the University of Mary Washington swimming program has announced the addition of a 14-member class of 2018. The women’s team will have five new faces on deck while the men will have nine.
In the women’s class, Maddy Rymer (VA) will be an immediate impact swimmer in the butterfly and backstroke events while Corrie Presland-Byrne (NH) will be a key contributer in the breaststrokes and sprint freestyle. Bailey Stewart (VA) and Sam Gorton (VA) look to make a splash in the butterfly events along with teammate Megan Murphy (VA) who will also be a great addition to the IMs. With the graduation of a large senior class in 2014 these ladies will have a lot of expectation on them as the Eagles look to capture their 25th Capital Athletic Conference title in February and move on the NCAAs in March.
On the men’s side look for Anthony Stephens (FL) and Matt Martinez (VA) in the IMs and breaststroke. Chris Cassingham (TX) will be a great addition in 100/200 fly and mid-distance freestyles where he will be joined by Christian Berardo (NJ) who is one of the groups most versatile swimmers. Peter Grap (VA) adds his talents in the longer freestyles to the d-team along with teammate Gray Liddell (VA). Watch for Kenyon Huber-Wilker (VA) in the breaststroke and mid-distance freestyles. Alexander Rios (Korea) and Josiah Cherry (VA) will add depth to an already talented sprint corps. The men look to take home another CAC championship and improve on their 17th place finish at NCAAs come March.
Head Coach Abby Brethauer says of her incoming class “We are so proud to have these young men and women joining the Eagle family and look forward to all that they will accomplish both in and out of the water. In addition to being stellar athletes who will come in and immediately play a role in the success of the team, they are also very talented students who over-achieve in the classroom as well. I am psyched to get them on campus and look forward to working with them to continue to build on our recent successes within the program.”
