1992-93 MWC Women's Swimming Season in Review

Asking for marked improvement from a team which went 10-2 in dual-meet competition, claimed six All-Americans and finished 11th at NCM Division III nationals might seem overzealous. Yet a record setting senior class believes it can buoy MWC to a possible fourth straight CAC championship and the goal of a first-ever Top 10 finish at NCAA Nationals. Headlining the Class of '94 is Shannon Hutcherson (Midlothian, VA), who set seven MWC individual and three relay records en route to seven All-American citations. She became MWC's first individual national champion in any sport when she won the 200 backstroke at NCAA Nationals. The 1993 CAC Female Swimmer of the Year also finished second in the 400 IM and fifth in the 200 IM in addition to performing on four All-American relay teams.

Senior Amanda Clair (Lancaster, PA) is the team's top breaststroke performer, having defended her CAC 100 breast title in '93 and performed on four All-America relay teams in '93. Freestyler Sarah Hertz (Fairfax, VA) participated on five All-America relay teams in '93. Other proven seniors include backstroke specialist Heidi Heise (Blue Springs, MO), IM/distance freestyler Alison Cerul (Nokesville, VA), distance freestyler Megan Carter (New Providence, NJ) and IM/fly specialist Jill Trussell (Roanoke, VA).

Junior Amanda Dresser (Williamsburg, VA) - an All-America butterfly performer and double CAC winner in 1992 - performed on two All-America relays last spring. Sarah King (Lancaster, PA) and Nancy McClain (New Fairfield, CT) were standouts as freshmen in '92-93. King was the CAC champion in the 100 back and qualified for nationals, and also was a four-time relay All American, while McClain captured the CAC 200 butterfly title. A third freshman, Liz Darcy (Brightwaters, NY), was a sixth relay All-American. Classmate Eliza Barcus (Reston, VA) is solid in the middle-distance/distance freestyle. Top freshmen include Cynthia Owen (Chesterfield, VA), Emily Williams (Akron, OH) and Elizabeth Bedell (Woodbridge, VA).
