UMW Women's Soccer Tops Salisbury, 3-1, with Late Rally

Senior midfielder Hope Grzebien scored in the 84th minute of play to put the Eagles ahead, and freshman Kaitlyn Venzen added another in the 87th, giving the University of Mary Washington women's soccer team a 3-1 victory over Salisbury University on Saturday afternoon at the Battleground in Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference play. The Eagles improve to 7-3-2 on the season.

Salisbury jumped ahead, scoring the first goal, and the lone tally of the first half. In the second, senior Amanda Krest evened the score at 57:10 on an assist from Ellen Shine

The game remained tied until 83:11, when Grzebien took a cross from Krest on the right and found the nets inside the far post to give UMW the lead for good. Then, with less than three minutes left, Venzen took a pass from her sister Kristina and scored her sixth of the season, providing a big insurance score.

The Eagles led in shots, 18-7, as well as corner kicks, 5-1. UMW goalkeeper Ally Holden made three saves, as the Eagles carry their unbeaten streak to 10 straight.

UMW will be back in action on Wednesday when they visit St. Mary's College of MD at 7:00 p.m.
