UMW Women's Soccer Closes Regular Season with 5-2 Win Over Southern Va.

Freshman Abby Zimmerman scored a pair of goals and added a pair of assists to lead the University of Mary Washington women's soccer team to a 5-2 victory over Southern Virginia University on Wednesday afternoon at the Battleground in the regular season finale. Junior Corinne Carson also scored twice for the Eagles, who improve to 10-3-1 on the season.

Zimmerman and the Eagles wasted no time in starting the scoring, as the freshman put the Eagles ahead at 2:33 on an assist from classmate Margot Brown. Zimmerman scored again at 7:20 unassisted to push the Eagle lead to two. Southern Virginia answered with a goal from Haylee Grimmer Goering at 7:56, but the Eagles regained a two-score margin at 17:22, as Carson scored on a Zimmerman assist.

After an own goal cut the score to 3-2 just before halftime, Carson scored on another Zimmerman assist at 50:27. Freshman Lindsey Hendrickson pushed the lead to 5-2 at 72:02 on a Gracie Williams assist.

The Eagles led in shots, 17-6, as well as in corner kicks, 6-0. UMW goalkeeper Kelcie Macomber made two saves in picking up the win, while Carmel Armstrong and Kylie Lulich each had one save for Southern Virginia.

Mary Washington (#2 seed) will host a Capital Athletic Conference Tournament Quarterfinal match on Saturday at 11:00 a.m., against seventh seeded Penn State-Harrisburg.
