Sophomore defender Jenny Mayo scored on a scrum in front of goal in the 76th minute to propel the University of Mary Washington women's soccer team to a 1-0 Capital Athletic Conference victory over St. Mary's College of Md. on Tuesday afternoon at the Battleground. UMW improves to 11-1-2 on the season.

It was the Seahawks who jumped out of the gates early, outshooting the Eagles, 11-3, in the opening half. UMW also had several counter oppourtunities, but neither team would score, thanks mainly to 10 first half saves from UMW sophomore goalkeeper Charlotte Owens.

In the second half, the roles were reversed, as UMW outshot the Seahawks, 10-7. St. mary's keeper Kelsey Wirtz made six second half stops, but it was Mayo, on a ball that was deflected off of several players on a Lizzie Weast corner kick, found the nets at 75:13. St. Mary's had a breakaway opportunity in the final 10 minutes, but Owens made a sprawling block to nullify the play.

St. Mary's led in shots, 18-13, while UMW led in corner kicks, 8-4, with six coming in the second half. Owens had 12 saves on the day.

The Eagles improve to 11-1-2 overall, and 3-1-2 in Capital Athletic Conference play. They will host Bridgewater College on Saturday at 1:00 pm for Homecoming.
