UMW Women's Soccer Tops Marymount, 3-2

The University of Mary Washington women's soccer team scored three first half goals and held on for a 3-2 victory over Marymount University on Tuesday afternoon in Capital Athletic Conference action at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 6-2-1 overall and 3-1 in CAC play.

UMW wasted little time in assuming the lead, as junior forward Amy Olson scored on a header assisted by Emmalee Denkler at 2:28 on the Eagles' first shot of the day. Freshman Tina Rader upped the Eagle lead to 2-0 with an unassisted goal at 20:53. Less than 40 seconds later, Marymount's Katarina Hamelin scored on a Paige Pierson assist to cut the deficit back to one at 2-1. Freshman Sarah McMillan gave UMW a 3-1 lead at 35:26, which eventually became the game winner.

Marymount scored the only goal of the second frame, as Hamelin scored again at 71:22.

The Eagles outshot the Saints, 20-7, and had eight corner kicks to two for MU. Tina Brehm had three saves for the Eagles, while Candice Lane had four and Gabriela Prellezo had three for the Saints.

Mary Washington will visit Salisbury University on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
