UMW Women's Soccer falls to #12 Rowan, 2-1

12th ranked Rowan University scored the go-ahead goal with 5:48 remaining to hold on for a 2-1 victory over the University of Mary Washington in women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles fall to 1-1-1 on the year.

Rowan got on the scoreboard first, as Veronica Rhea scored at 14:35 on an assist from Dayna Sakalsky. The game remained 1-0 through halftime, until UMW senior Gabriela Rangel-LaFuente (Vienna, Va., George C. Marshall) scored unassisted when her third shot in succession finally got past Rowan goalie Deana Wood at 49:46.

Rowan scored the game winner when Sakalsky scored unassisted with 5:48 remaining.

Rowan outshot the Eagles, 12-6, and had four corner kicks to none for the home team. UMW goalie Tina Brehm (Springfield, Va., Robert E. Lee) had three saves, as did Wood for Rowan.

The Eagles will play Bridgewater College on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
