Senior Sarah Tryon (Fairfax Station, Va., South County) scored the game's only goal 4:26 into play to lead the University of Mary Washington women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over visiting Shenandoah University on Wednesday at the Battleground in both teams' season opener. UMW outshot the guests, 18-5, in the contest.
Tryon made the most of the Eagles' first shot of the game, dribbling right across the 18-yard line and placing a right-footed shot into goal at 4:26. Although the Eagles would put 10 more shots on frame, the final stood as a one goal advantage.
Mary Washington held an 18-5 lead in shots, and a 6-1 edge in corner kicks. Shenandoah's Kat Terza had 10 saves, while UMW junior Tina Brehm (Springfield, Va., Robert E. Lee) made three saves in recording the shutout.
The Eagles (1-0) will visit Eastern Mennonite University on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
