1994 Mary Washington College Women's Soccer Season in Review

A major goal for head coach Kurt Glaeser and his 1994 Eagles was a return to national prominence. After missing the NCAA National Tournament for the first time in five years in '93, MWC returned to the prestigious field last fall.

In all, the Eagles went 12-4-3, while going undefeated inCapitalAthletic Conference (CAC) regular-season play. MWC also downed fourth-ranked Geneseo State while tying three other eventual NCAA teams in Methodist, Randolph-Macon and national semifinalist North Carolina Wesleyan.

In '94, a strong midfield keyed the Eagle ascent. Junior Stefanie Teter (Burke, VA) led the CAC in scoring with 14 goals and 11 assists for 39 points. The CAC Player of the Year was also named a Second-Team All-American. Mary Beth Leightley (Sr./Fairfax, VA) was fourth in CAC scoring with 25 points (10g/ 5a) en route to All-CAC and All-Region honors. And Kelley Walsh (Sr./Vienna, VA) became the first player in CAC history to be named to the First Team all four seasons. Joining Teter in the midfield will be several talented returnees, including Anne Mullins (Fr./Freehold, NJ; 2g/4a), Liz Siciliano (Fr./E. Setauket, NY;2g/3a) and Michele Beagan (Fr./Sandwich, MA; 19/2a). All three will vie for starting positions this fall.

Aside from Teter, Coach Glaeser welcomes back several other talented players. Fullback Kim Hrabosky (So./Fredericksburg, VA) was named First-Team All-CAC for the second straight year; she finished fifth among MWC scorers with 10 points (3g/4a). Defender Victoria Rheinstrom (Jr./ Annandale, VA) was tabbed Second-Team All-CAC. Felicity Smith (Fr./ Dover, MA) and Adrien Snedeker (Fr./Lawrenceville, NJ) were also starters in a back line which shut out seven opponents in '94. Goalkeeper Jen Koster (Fr./ Scotch Plains, NJ) registered all seven blankings while playing 1,665 of a possible 1,710 minutes.

Among the forwards, First-Team All-CAC choice Julie Mason (Jr./Virginia Beach, VA; 7g/4a for 18 points) and Alissa Magrum (Jr./Fairfax, VA; 2g/1a) will be seniors to watch in '95. Robin Kozic (So./Navesink, NJ) finished fourth among Eagle scorers with 14 points (6g/2a). Freshmen Anne Wenthe (Glen Rock, NJ; 3g/ 3a) and Katy Sullivan (Medfield, MA; 2 g/1a) both show promise, and veteran Susan Cors (So./ Hampton, VA) also returns.

"Our 1994 team was the quickest and most technically sound group we've had in my six years," said Glaeser. "But this was a young team, in every sense of the word. A year's experience should help our concentration and poise. The loss of two excellent midfielders will be hard to offset, but otherwise, we have a great nucleus returning in '95.
