1993 Mary Washington College Women's Soccer Season in Review

For the Mary Washington College women's soccer team, 1993 was both a success and a disappointment. Coming off a semifinal appearance at the '92 NCAA Tournament, the young Eagles had high hopes, but fell short of a fifth consecutive NCAA bid.

However, MWC's ability to play through two key season-ending injuries helped register an 11-7-1 record, a third straight Capital Athletic Conference title and an Eastern College Athletic Conference Tournament bid. As a solid nucleus returns in '94, MWC aims to return to the NCAA Tournament.

The Eagles lost 12-goal scorer Becky Miller (Sr./ Alexandria, VA) to a preseason knee injury and 11-goal producer Julie Mason (So./Virginia Beach, VA) to a broken leg in the season's third game. Still MWC played tough against some of the nation's best teams, including five NCAA entries, one being eventual national champion Trenton State (2-0 loss).

The Eagle lineup should gain potency in '94 with the return of All-Region forwards Miller and Mason, coupled with the development of younger players. Sophomore midfielder Stefanie Teter (Burke, VA) was named Second-Team All-Region for the second straight year after leading MWC in scoring with 19 points (six goals/seven assists). Teter joined midfield teammate Kelley Walsh Or./Vienna, VA) as CAC Co-Players of the Year. Walsh (four goals/five assists) had won the '92 CAC award.

Adding stability to the midfield were veterans Mary Beth Leightley Or./Fairfax, VA) and Victoria Rheinstrom (So./Annandale, VA) and First-Team All-CAC defender Kim Hrabosky (Fr./ Fairfax, VA). Leightley, an All-CAC Second-Team choice, scored four goals and Rheinstrom added three, while Hrabosky emerged as an impact player with both aggressiveness and finesse.

Freshman Robin Kozic (Navesink, NJ), a Second-Team All-CAC selection, tied for the team lead with six goals while playing forward and midfield. Striker Alissa Magrum (So./Fairfax,VA) had two goals, and Mary Knight (Jr./Arlington, VA) added consistency in the midfield. Defensively, Glaeser must replace graduating senior standouts Naomi Fagan (Springfield, VA), a two-time All-State selection, and Sandy Garrett (Storrs, CT). Soph Laura Duffey (Norfolk, VA) and junior Beverly Hoover (Dallastown, PA) showed promise at defender in '93. All-CAC goalkeeper Amy Wilvert (Jr./Springfield, VA) posted eight shutouts.
