On Saturday October 28, the UMW women's rugby team traveled to Frederick, Maryland to play in the Mid-Atlantic Rugby Conference semifinals. UMW faced Temple University, who was ranked #6 in the National Collegiate Rugby Division II Coaches Poll. Earlier in the day, the University of Delaware defeated American University.
From the opening kickoff, both teams took turns possessing the ball. It appeared like #6 Temple was going to have to work to get past UMW. Both teams had minor miscues, but each team looked as if they could manage the ball in contact. However, a rucking error by UMW at the 9th minute, led to a 40-meter run by Temple. The conversion made the score 7-0. On the following kickoff, Temple's pace accelerated. Although UMW had some possession in the minutes that followed, Temple's hustle allowed them to control the breakdowns and possession. A number of missed tackles led to a Temple score at the 13th minute. Temple converted and now the score was 14-0. Temple continued their dominance and put five trys on the board in the following 22 minutes. Converting most of the trys, it was 47-0 at half, in Temple's favor.
During the first half, UMW suffered several injuries. Due to insufficient players and safety concerns, UMW withdrew from the match before starting the second period.
Mary Washington will play for 3rd place in the Mid-Atlantic Rugby Conference at Wilmington, Delaware on Nov 4.
