On Saturday September 30, the UMW women's rugby team travelled to Annapolis Maryland to play the United States Naval Academy Second XV. Although Navy plays in Div I, they have a developmental side that competes in Division II.
Even though both sides had opportunities to score, the fitness and discipline from the USNA women allowed them to control most of the match. Several open field breaks and missed plays by UMW allowed the USNA women to score a number of tries in the first half. At the break, USNA led 25-0.
In the second half, UMW was able to make some adjustments to the pace of their play. However, the depth of the USNA women was still enough to handle UMW in the second half, outscoring them 14-7. In the end, the final was 39-5 in favor of the U.S. Naval Academy. Scoring for UMW in the 69th minute was Theresa Oetgen ('27). Oetgen has now scored in each of her first two UMW rugby matches.
On Saturday Oct 7, UMW will host the College of William and Mary. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:00 am.
