Women's Rugby Falls to George Washington, 29-17

Women's Rugby Falls to George Washington, 29-17

On September 25, 2021, the Mary Washington women's rugby team hosted George Washington University.  A cancelled match earlier in the season against Virginia Commonwealth University and a postponement the prior weekend against GW added to the anticipation of the match.  For both teams, it was their first rugby match in 19 months.

Unfortunately for Mary Washington, the result was 29-17 in George Washington's favor.

The match started well for UMW, as Olivia Stuart scored a try just 3 minutes into the match.  Kayla Smith kicked the conversation to bring the score to 7-0, in UMW's favor.  However, UMW relaxed their defense on the kickoff and GW scored just two minutes later.  UMW answered quickly at minute nine, with a try scored by Victoria Rulapaugh.  With the conversions missed on both previous tries, UMW now led 12-5.  George Washington turned on their offense attack, scoring 3 more tires before the half.  Converting two of the tries, GW led 24-12 at half time.

The second half opened to a slower paced match, with both teams moving the ball up and down the field.  At the 62nd minute, Olivia Stuart scored a second try for UMW.  The conversion was missed, bringing the score to 24-17.  UMW was now one score away from tying the match.  However, 5 minutes later, a George Washington player broke free, scoring a try, and moving GW further ahead at 29-17.  The would be the final score of the match.

While it was not the victory that the women's rugby team wanted, the players were glad to finally be back on the rugby pitch.  The team would like to thank the supporting friends, family, and alumni who were in attendance.
