
The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team dropped a 13-12 decision at 21st ranked Christopher Newport University on Wednesday evening in the semifinal of the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Tournament in Newport News, Va. The Eagles close the season with a record of 5-13.
CNU jumped out to an early lead in the game, netting the first two scores of the evening, before senior Bridget Crowley got the Eagles on the board with 5:29 remaining in the first. The Captains closed the first with a last-minute goal, and netted the first four goals of the second quarter to build a 7-1 lead. Senior Katie Blair scored with 4:08 left, and added another in the final minute to pull the Eagles to within 7-3, before the Captains added a las-second score to take an 8-3 lead to halftime.
The Eagles turned the tide in the third quarter, starting with a Molly Daw goal one minute into play. After a CNU goal, Crowley scored on a free position at 8:01, and Blair added her third of the day with 13 seconds left, putting the Eagles back into the game, trailing 9-6 after three quarters.
In the fourth, UMW continued its run, with Crowley and Caeley Terapne scoring in the opening minutes to draw to within 9-8. CNU answered with two scores, before Terapane added her second of the night with 10:16 left. The Captains answered with the next two goals to go up 13-9, but Blair scored twice more and Daw scored with 1:25 to pull UMW to within one, 13-12. CNU won the draw control snad held possession until the final seconds.
CNU led in shots, 29-27, as well as ground balls, 16-12. Senior goalie Cailyn Tripp made nine saves on the day.
