UMW Women's Lacrosse Tops Southern Virginia, 17-4: Sarazin Tops Draw Control Mark

The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team jumped out to a big early advantage and cruised to a 17-4 victory over Southern Virginia University on Tuesday afternoon at the Battleground. Senior Kayla Sarazin broke the school season record for draw controls, with her 86th, for the Eagles, who improve to 9-6 on the season.

The Eagles started the fireworks at 13:51 on a score from freshman Maya Koebke, and Sarazin followed at 11:52 on a free position shot. Clare Madden added another at 11:03, and Katie Blair scored with 8:18 left to grow the lead to 4-0. Molly Daw then scored a pair of goals at 7:22 and 6:06, and Koebke and Sarazin capped the quarter with goals in the closing minutes.

Blair opened the second with a tally on a Koebke assist, and Erin Steinberg extended the lead to 10-0 on a Sarain assist with 9:37 to go. After a Southern Virginia goal, UMW used scores from Madden, Sarazin, and Ashley Firesheets to close the half, and go to intermission with a 13-1 lead.

Each team scored one in the third quarter, with Daw accounting for the Eagles at 11:37 on a Steinberg feed. In the fourth, Caeley Terapane scored quickly on a Madden assist, and Firesheets followed on a Leanne Larkin pass. Kendel Iwanicki scored midway through the fourth.

UMW led in shots, 36-17, as well as draw controls, 17-6, with Sarazin grabbing six. Cailyn Tripp and Brooke Barsella each had five saves in 30 minutes of action between the pipes.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday when they visit Salisbury University at 1:00 p.m.
