UMW Women's Lacrosse Falls at #11 Messiah, 17-6, on Saturday

The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team dropped a 17-6 decision at 11th ranked Messiah University on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles slip to 6-5 on the season.

The Falcons jumped on top early, scoring five times in the opening 7:30. UMW reached the scoreboard at 7:02, as junior Katie Blair scored on an assist from senior Kayla Sarazin. Messiah added another, and closed th first quarter with a 6-1 lead.

UMW opened the second quarter with an unassisted tally from Blair, and, after a Falcon goal, another from freshman Maya Koebke. The Falcons scored in the final minute to take an 8-3 lead to halftime.

Freshman Daelyn Gregory scored for UMW on an assist from Sarazin to open the third, but Messiah went on to score the next six goals to extend its lead to 14-4 into the fourth quarter. Blair and Koebke connected for goals for the Eagles in the fourth.

Messiah led in shots, 30-20, as well as ground balls, 16-12, while UMW had a 14-13 edge in draw controls (five from Sarazin). UMW goalkeeper Cailyn Tripp had nine saves between the pipes.

The Eagles will host St. Mary's College on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
