UMW Women's Lacrosse Tops Washington Md., 16-12

Junior Katie Blair scored six goals and freshman Maya Koebke added four to lead the University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team to a 16-12 victory over Washington (Md.) College on Saturday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 6-3 on the season.

UMW started swiftly, as Kayla Sarazin opened the scoring in the opening minute, and the Eagles held a 3-1 lead after goals from Koebke at 12:10 and 8:02. Washington College scored three straight to end the first and open the second, but UMW knotted the score at 4-4 on a Clare Madden score at 8:25. The teams traded goals, with Blair picking up her first of the day with 1:11 left, but the Shorewomen talied twice in the last minute to take a 7-5 lead to halftime.

Everything changed in the third, as the Eagles reeled off eight straight to open the frame. Koebke opened the run at 13:35 unassisted, and Sarazin followed in the next two minutes. Caely Terapane followed on an assist from Sarazin at 10:05, and Blair added another free position score at 9:30. At 6:19, Victoria Mueller scored on a Molly Daw assist, and Daw followed a minute later on her own to build the lead to 12-7. Blair added another, before the Shorewomen added one cut move the margin to 13-8 after three quarters.

In the fourth, Washington scored the first two before Blair and Koebke answered to move the Eagles ahead, 15-10, with 9:54 remaining. WAC scored with 4:02 left, but Blair added another at 1:54. 

Washington led in shots, 34-32, while the Eagles led in draw controls, 17-14. UMW goalkeeper Cailyn Tripp made 15 saves on the day, and Sarazin had four ground balls.

UMW will be back in action on Wednesday when the Eagles host Washington & Lee University at 4:00 p.m.
