UMW Women's Lax Falls to Stevens, 12-8, on Wednesday

The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team dropped a 12-8 decision to Stevens University on Wednesday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles fall to 5-3 on the season.

Stevens jumped in front early in the first quarter, building a 4-0 lead over the first 12 minutes. UMW gained its first goal with 10 seconds remaining, as Erin Stenberg scored on an assist from Katie Blair.

The Eagles fougt back in the second, after allowing a Stevens score, as Kayla Sarazin scored on a Clare Madden assist with 5:36 left, and Maya Koebke scored on a free position shot with 19 seconds left to pull UMW to within 5-3 at halftime.

UMW started strong in the third quarter, as Blair scored unassisted at 10:42, and Sarazin tied the score at 5-5 with a free position score with 8:56 left. Unfortunately, the Ducks reeled off the next four goals to lead, 9-5, entering the fourth.

Steinberg opened the scoring in the final quarter on a Koebke assist with 14:11 left, and, after a Stevens goal, Blair scored again unassisted with 8:45 left to pull UMW to within 10-7. After two Ducks goals, Victoria Mueller capped the scoring for the Eagles, with a final margin of 12-8.

Stevens led in shots, 31-26, as well as ground balls, 18-16. Stevens claimed 15 draw controls. UMW goalkeeper Cailyn Tripp made 13 saves on the day.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday when they host Washington (Md.) College at 1:00 p.m.
