UMW Women's Lax Falls in OT to #16 Catholic, 10-9, on Wednesday

The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team found itself in an early deficit, roared back to force overtime, but fell to 16th ranked Catholic University, 10-9, on Wednesday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles slip to 6-6 on the season.

Catholic started swiftly, scoring the first three goals of the game. Mary Washington trimmed the deficit to 3-1 with three seconds left in the first quarter, as Katie Blair scored on a Kayla Sarazin assist in transition. 

Catholic would score the first four goals of the second quarter to take a 7-1 lead, but the Eagles continued to chip away, as Molly Daw scored on a Sarazin assist with 4:28 left, and again with 51 seconds left on an assist from Leanne Larkin, bringing UMW to within 7-3 at halftime.

In the third, Blair scored with 12:56 left, before the Cardinals answered to return the margin to four, at 8-4. Blair scored twice in a 14 second span with three minute remaining to draw UMW to within 8-6, and the Eagles opened the fourth quarter with two more, both from Bridget Crowley, to tie the score at 8-8. Catholic went up on a free position goal with 2:47 left, but Blair added one of her own with 57 seconds left, and the game went to overtime tied at nine.

In the extra period, Catholic scored with two seconds left on a free position shot.

Catholic led in shots, 34-29, as well as in ground balls, 25-19. UMW goalkeeper Reilly Miller made 14 saves.

The Eagles will be back in action again on Saturday when they host Albright College at 3:30 p.m.
